About the Project
Hancock Lofts reimagines the historic Sykes Brothers Yarn Mill, first established in 1881, into 49 residential units and six artist studios. The design celebrates the building’s industrial heritage while introducing modern amenities for contemporary living. Expansive windows and soaring ceilings flood the loft-style apartments with natural light, highlighting the preserved masonry and structural details that speak to the site’s history. The adaptive reuse centers on a newly designed lobby and reconfigured amenity spaces, establishing a sophisticated entry sequence and community hub while maintaining the integrity of the original mill. The result is a thoughtful balance of historic character and modern comfort, positioning Hancock Lofts as both a neighborhood landmark and a model for adaptive reuse living in Philadelphia.
