About the Project

Originally constructed in 1919, the Royal Theatre served as a cultural landmark for Philadelphia’s African American community before closing in 1970. After decades of vacancy and deterioration, the site was redeveloped through a thoughtful preservation effort that retained the theater’s historic façade while introducing a new mixed-use building behind it. Although the original auditorium could not be preserved, the project carefully integrates the restored façade with contemporary architecture, creating a dialogue between old and new that honors the site’s history while contributing to the continued revitalization of South Street.
